Do To The Beast

Afghan Whigs

image
Released: Apr 2014
Label: Sub Pop Records
The first Afghan Whigs album since 1998 more or less picks up where the otherwise prolific Greg Dulli's biggest band left off: hard grunge muscle injected with blaxploitation score strings, castanets, slap bass and wailing backup singers' falsettos up against Dulli's frayed one. He's still in love with soul sounds rather than soul songwriting, and it makes for an interesting twist up against the 3/4-time blues racket of "Parked Outside" or the snakelike, palm-muted grooves of "Matamoros." There are plenty of catchy, colorful song-dramas throughout, including the U2-like "The Lottery."
