The Legendary Okeh & Epic Recordings

Ahmad Jamal

image
Released: Aug 2005
Label: Epic/Legacy
In these early 1950s recordings, Jamal used the standard piano/guitar/bass trio (plus conga) format popularized by Nat Cole to expand the jazz vocabulary, earning a chart hit with "Poinciana" in the process. Jamal often sidestepped bebop soloing, opting to improvise on harmony lines while fragmenting and repeating portions of the melody. Miles Davis studied these sessions.
