Dangerous Woman (Explicit)

Ariana Grande

Released: May 2016
Label: Universal Records
On a third album released half a year after originally rumored, nearly a year after a wacky donut-licking controversy, and just weeks short of her 23rd birthday, Ariana Grande alternates woozy cooing and chirping with flexible vocal exercises about bodies touching bodies. She also taps pretty much every stylistic era of Mariah Carey’s career over all sorts of percolating grooves from the doo-wop-and-strings sweetness in “Moonlight” and glockenspiel-ish plinking and plonking in “Be Alright” to the Paula Abdul-style bubble-funk in “Greedy.” She also tosses in island resort sunshine in “Sometimes,” Nicki Minaj-assisted pop-reggae in “Side To Side” and gothic, speakeasy blues in the Macy Gray duet “Leave Me Lonely.” Lil Wayne and Future also stop by, although 2015’s crunky, brassy Top 10 Jamie Foxx collaboration “Focus” somehow didn’t make the cut.
