Once a hanger-on at hip-hop's fringes, Daedelus takes a victory lap with Bespoke, his second album for Ninja Tune. A decade into his career, he finds himself at the center of Los Angeles' "beat music" scene, matched only by Flying Lotus in his ability to spin a kaleidoscopic collage of colorful orchestral samples and rough-cut dance grooves. Mixing '50s orchestration, intergalactic static and angelic choruses, "Slowercase D" epitomizes his approach: If Thomas Pynchon had a backing DJ, it'd surely be Daedelus.
