Grisman and Hartford are two of bluegrass' great mavericks. Yet this 1999 album sees them teaming up with Mike Seeger for a faux-vintage song cycle replete with crackling static intro. Nothing, however, is ever simple with these guys. In addition to bluegrass classics like "Flint Hill Special" and "Rocky Top," the group turns several rock standards -- including Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" and Chuck Berry's "Memphis" -- into string-band arcana. Needless to say, the trio's shtick is totally convincing.
