Drake and Future’s instantly successful and somewhat nonessential What a Time to Be Alive works best if heard as a pure romp. There is a blurry trap ballad in “Diamonds Dancing,” and sports metaphors abound on “Jumpman” and “I’m the Plug.” But to be fair, there is a singular shining moment, and it is Drake’s. On “30 for 30 Freestyle,” he demonstrates his ability to acknowledge the distance between his younger “Best I Ever Had” persona and his current self without apologizing for his evolution into a different kind of performer, and gives us a reason to continue to listen to him.
