If There Was a Way

Dwight Yoakam

image
Released: Oct 1990
Label: Rhino/Warner Records
Yoakam entered the 1990s with this fourth full-length, keeping close to the path of traditionalism while expanding the borders of new country. Laid-back in tone, If There Was a Way features prominent fiddles and understated Teles. The roll of the Bakersfield sound is very much present, however, and Yoakam's songwriting is uniformly excellent. "It Only Hurts When I Cry" (written with Roger Miller) is the key track, but the title cut and the Wilbert Harrison cover "Let's Work Together" bolster Yoakam's rep as a country music innovator.
