For much of her career, Alison Goldfrapp has been an electro-glam enchantress, delivering seductive come-ons over synth-pop imbued with plenty of T. Rex swagger. But Tales of Us finds Goldfrapp and collaborator Will Gregory returning to the ethereal, acoustic-tinged moods they explored on 2008's Seventh Tree, trading disco stomp for a more contemplative sound that's reminiscent of Air and Cocteau Twins. The electro-acoustic arrangements are a careful balance of skeletal and sumptuous, and Goldfrapp is a more commanding presence than ever, even at her most restrained.
