The sweet-toothed L.A. noise-rockers' first new album since 2009 is best at its heaviest and snarlingest. The slow-mo metronomic stomp of opener "Victim," the fizzing, jagged closer "Drugs Exist," and the machine-gun stutter that brutalizes the synth wash of "Salvia" each electrify (while the pulsing synthpop of "Life" or "Flesh World" merely soothes). The band is most powerful when its members' instinct for noisy assault shatters and makes strange their talent for sweet indie-pop melody: Try the fragile croon that's systematically vandalized during "Courtship II."
