Let's not get carried away by slapping the "punk" tag on Huey Lewis and The News' 1980 debut. That said, its punchy rhythms, streamlined riffs, agitated pace and overall pop-addict glee are way more English new wave than bloated American arena rock. In the mid-1970s, while still fronting the now-forgotten Clover, Lewis spent a little time in England, hanging with Nick Lowe. The pub-rock icon's skinny-tie influence permeates numerous tracks, particularly the likable "Now Here's You" and "Trouble in Paradise." Lewis, on both cuts, even mimics Lowe's signature phrasing.
