It wasn't for nothing that Jakob Dylan tapped T Bone Burnett to twiddle the knobs on his sophomore solo effort. The Grammy-winning Burnett adds sepia-toned nuances -- the sad wail of a slide guitar, the slight strum of a banjo, a joyless fiddle -- to create a vibrant, dusty Americana landscape in which Dylan plays. "Down On Our Own Shield" is a gorgeous beauty that features Neko Case. In fact, eight of the 11 songs are colored with the lovely voices of Case and Kelly Hogan. Other highlights include "Nothing But the Whole Wide World," "Truth for a Truth" and "Smile When You Call Me That."
