High In The Rockies

Jason Boland

Released: Apr 2010
Label: APEX MUSIC
This is a useful introduction to a tireless Texas road band. Boland ably copes with drink, women and Nashville hypocrisy through the first half, making you care most when he drives into Austin's night to escape a life of Comal County monotony. But midway through -- starting with Tom Russell's sizzling border-town, cock-fighting yarn "Gallo del Cielo" -- things kick into gear, for the next three songs especially: twisters attacking yokels in "Blowing Through the Hills," soldiers waiting to rotate home in "Time in Hell," existential napalm and Islam in "Jesus and Ruger."
