Who Is Jill Scott? - Words and Sounds, Vol. 1

Jill Scott

Released: Jul 2000
Label: Hidden Beach Records
Prior to the release of her debut Who Is Jill Scott?, the Philly vocalist paid many dues, including writing the hook for The Roots' Grammy-nominated hit "You Got Me." Finally given the spotlight, she unveiled an incredible vocal range, from light trills on "He Loves Me," to ominous growls on "Gettin' In The Way." The soon-to-be married Scott's personal life soared, too, and she sang optimistically about love, including the Bible-quoting "A Long Walk." Jazzy Jeff's production company A Taste of Jazz complemented her with smooth (if too polite) neo-soul, but Scott is the key star here.
