Nobody really knows why it took indie rockers until the dawn of the 21st century to realize that early Hawkwind records are badass, but with wonderfully mind-melting music coming from bands like Comets on Fire, the Assembled Head in Sunburst Sound, Dead Meadow and now Mammatus, perhaps it's best we not look a gift horse in the mouth. The latter's second album boasts doubled harmonic guitar leads, a sternum-rattling rhythm section, some flutes, a totally sweet gong, underwater vocals and one of those oldfangled, ring-modulator, tape-echo thingies that all the new, bearded psychedelic rockers lug around.
