Modern Love

Matt Nathanson opens Modern Love, the follow-up to 2007's Some Mad Hope, with an infectious number called "Faster." Over a funky acoustic, one that recalls George Michael's "Faith," the sassy singer-songwriter unleashes some sexy talk: "You're sweet on the tip of my tongue/ You taste like sunlight and strawberry bubblegum." From there, Nathanson explores the nature of relationships (why they work, why they fail, where they wander, etc.) in each successive track. The concept is loose, for sure, and ultimately takes a backseat to the never-ending deluge of pop hooks and feel-good choruses.
