California Suite

Sammy Davis, Jr.

image
Released: Jan 1964
Label: Rhino/Warner Records
During the early 1960s, Sammy Davis, Jr., was performing with Mel Torme and often working with his fine jazz arranger, Marty Paich. On this overlooked set, Davis sings Torme's extended California Suite, a wide-eyed tribute to the Golden State. You may not have the stamina to revisit the nearly half-hour showstopper often, so the real keepers are Davis' versions of such Torme-penned tunes as "Welcome to the Club," "Born to Be Blue" and "A Stranger Called the Blues." Fans of old Hollywood and the Rat Pack will have fun spotting who makes up Davis' California-hating peanut gallery.
