Rook

Shearwater

image
Released: Jun 2008
Label: Matador
As much as Rook is disquieting, eerie and morose, it is absolutely beautiful. Just when Jonathan Meiburg's achy, shaky falsetto nearly breaks you into pieces, Shearwater sprinkle in experimental hints that could be Eno relics. "Leviathan, Bound" and "Home Life" start out like Coldplay ballads, but booming horns and strings break the mold. "Lost Boys" shines with The Wall-like shouts and drumline beats, and "South Col"'s drones sound like a violin stuck in a space capsule. The artsy rock may not be for the faint-hearted, yet that's exactly who it will resonate the most with.
