Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP (Explicit)

Skrillex

Released: Dec 2010
Label: Big Beat Records/Atlantic
As dubstep spreads from the U.K. to foreign soil, its definition is changing. What passes for dubstep at a SoCal desert rave might sound completely alien in a London basement, and Skrillex is happy to exploit that. Formerly of the hardcore band From First to Last, he uses his own alien status to tweak the genre's rules. Instead of the rumbling groove, he emphasizes dubstep's most jagged tendencies in blasts of distorted synthesizer and heavily compressed FX. In its pacing and its shrill intensity, Skrillex's music sounds not unlike an FM radio jingle crossbred with industrial drum 'n' bass.
