If you listen to one singer-songwriter album this entire year, make it Slaid Cleaves' Unsung. A dusty collection of (unjustly) obscure songs written by some of his Americana-playing friends, Cleaves' Unsung feels like a salve on your soul: it feels like you've come home when you listen to this lyrical album. Songs such as the wistful, "Oh Roberta," and the blue-collar lament, "Call It Sleep," are enriched by Cleaves' sanguine voice, which seems to lend a hopeful air to these down-trodden characters.
