Behold a band bored by its own mastery. Look how they start off with a brief acoustic throwaway, and then toss lots of short-form ideas in between the "proper" songs. But the successes are many: "Screaming Skull" makes fine use of standard power chords; "Starfield Road" has a thrilling climax; the brute pounding of "In the Mind of the Bourgeois Reader" is one of their best punk appropriations. And Kim has a great run: from "Bull in the Heather" to "Skink" to "Quest for the Cup" and the finale, she offers a greater range of vocal color than usual, making this album an undercover gem.
