Bastardsong

Superconductor

Released: Jan 1996
Label: Boner
This second and final album from the Vancouver indie rock band (led by The New Pornographers' Carl Newman) trades in the jokiness and heavy metal underpinning of Hits for Girls for meandering ambitiousness -- and pulls it off. This 1996 release is supposedly a "concept" record, but the songs usually start falling apart halfway through, which adds to their charm and, more importantly, contributes to the involuntary jaw-dropping that happens here and there (first time is four minutes into "The Bastard Overture"). It's kind of fitting that Superconductor's last word doesn't make any sense.
