Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, Smiley Smile and Wild Honey, 1968's Friends is the third album largely recorded at Brian Wilson's home studio and featuring a strange yet warm amalgam of psychedelia, blue-eyed soul and folksy pop. Speaking of Brian, he contributes several quirky numbers, including an ode to slackerdom in "Busy Doin' Nothing" and the proto-New Age anthem "Anna Lee, The Healer." But far and away the biggest development is the unexpected emergence of drummer Dennis Wilson as a singer and songwriter. His cuts, "Little Bird" and "Be Still," are truly spell-binding.
