These N.Y.C. critic faves' third album was allegedly their biggest seller, thanks to "Judas Kiss" getting a bit of 1988 MTV play. It was also their best, with cameos from Pat Benatar, Syd Straw, Mojo Nixon and the Pandoras' Kim Shattuck; plus, Benatar's producer husband Neil Giraldo had toughened up and fleshed out the prototype alt country they'd started out with. The band comes off looser and more confident, and their Bronx/Lower East Side greaser shtick gets some humor. The pretty melodies finally click, too -- especially in throat-lumper "Cheyenne," about "a city boy in God's country."
