Falling somewhere between Frank Zappa's satirical avant-rock and the proto-new wave of the Doors (think "Hello, I Love You"), the United States of America were one of Los Angeles' most intense psychedelic-rock outfits. Their lone album, released on the CBS label in 1968, is an ominous fusion of futuristic hard rock, piercing electronic music and scathing sociopolitical discourse. In terms of pure feminine power, singer Dorothy Moskowitz is easily the equal of Janis Joplin and Grace Slick.
