Cellophane Symphony

Tommy James and the Shondells

image
Released: Sep 1969
Label: Rhino
Criminally underrated, Tommy James & The Shondells were true sonic chameleons throughout the 1960s and early '70s. Though the group is known primarily for its hit singles, from "Hanky Panky" to "Crimson & Clover," they produced a couple of stellar albums, including this trippy epic. Easily the strangest and most ambitious entry in the band's discography, Cellophane Symphony is a cerebral sojourn through synthesizer-fueled progressive rock, psychedelia, hippie folk and Christ-inspired pop. Highlights are too numerous to itemize, but "Evergreen" and "Sweet Cherry Wine" are not to be missed.
