Modern Vampires of the City

Vampire Weekend

image
Released: May 2013
Label: XL Recordings
Modern Vampires of the City is a hilarious title because Vampire Weekend are indeed vampires -- of Ezra Koenig's Afropop-derived guitar style, and of extracurricular name-drops like Lil Jon and balaclavas. The thing is, people really like vampires! Since everyone synthesizes the surrounding world day-to-day anyway, why not listen to a talented band in the same position? City's sounds are almost uniformly Western for once, from the Auto-Tuned rockabilly of "Diane Young" to "Step"'s screwed-down "Canon in D." Plus how many other chamber-pop bands make you want to decipher the words?
