This soundtrack for the documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? is notable for the return of Lauryn Hill. Her voice has declined since her '90s peak, and it's heartbreaking to hear her miss notes on the weirdly synthesized "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair." But she's still a compelling presence, as erratically brilliant as Simone once was. "See my Kalashnikov/ Lyrics with the safety off," she raps ferociously on "I Got Life." Despite contributions from Robert Glasper, Simone's daughter Lisa, and others, it's Lauryn's inscrutable performance that makes this more than a covers album.
