The impact that Zapp's "More Bounce to the Ounce" made on black music cannot be overstated. The Ohio band's fresh spin on P-Funk gave the genre a final shot at '80s reinvention, and Roger Troutman's ingenious use of talk box effects resonates in hip-hop, R&B and electronic music. The rest of this self-titled debut can't approach the incredible synthesizer bass thump of "More Bounce," and the group's attempts to make each song a seven-minute DJ-friendly workout gets tiring. However, "Be Alright" shines with its inspirational message, and "Freedom" is a nice slice of disco-funk.
