Description
The psychedelic drug culture of the 1960s created music in an experimental vein, using the studio as an instrument and altering guitar sounds. Heavy, guitar-oriented riffs like Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues" and the Jimi Hendrix Experience's "Purple Haze" cranked up the volume to create an overpowering guitar noise to match the overwhelming effects of psychedelic drugs. Acid Rock was the drug-addled brother to Hard Rock. Both led to the even harder sound of Heavy Metal.
