As Above So Below

Anthony David's forte is acoustic soul, but As Above So Below only offers "Backstreets," a curbside view of urban blight. Instead, he criticizes religious zealots ("God Said"), and attempts a Tears For Fears cover ("Everybody Wants to Rule the World") and a muted dance-pop number ("Girlfriend"). As Above, So Below suffers from David's outsized ambitions, yet he manages to soar on his effortlessly soulful nature. Perhaps the album's best song is "4evermore"; his unusually smooth and reedy Southern voice shines brightly when paired with singer Algebra and rapper Phonte Coleman.
