We'll never have enough Charlie Haden. As the "adagio" in the title implies, the 2005 Tokyo concert presented on this posthumous release finds the late bassist in songfully melancholic form, alongside pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Here, the pair explores two tunes, "En La Orilla Del Mundo" and "Transparence," that were part of a prior collaboration (Nocturne). These versions are more gorgeous for being sparer. Elsewhere, Haden's sometime bandleader Ornette Coleman gets his due as a composer, with the inclusion of “When Will the Blues Leave?” A pleasing addition to a potent duo's discography.
