Is this the album that breaks one of New England's best kept secrets? Possibly. On Promised Land Williams continues her gradual transformation from straight up folkie to jangly pop rocker. Pulsating numbers like "It's All Right" and "Buzzer" sound inspired by Americana goddess Tift Merritt (though with considerably less twang). The expanded arrangements totally suit Williams, who has always possessed more than enough oomph to keep up with a full band featuring horns, organ and piano. Good stuff.
