The last time trumpeter Dave Douglas stepped outside the jazz tradition to find grooves, he wound up playing with the new-classical group So Percussion (on the album GPS, Vol. 3: Bad Mango). This time, Douglas has formed an electronically savvy quartet that includes Shigeto (a DJ on the Ghostly International label), bassist Jonathan Maron and drummer Mark Guiliana. This group's relaxed fusion places a premium on atmosphere; things never get too wild. But they don't coast, either: Just check out how opener "Molten Sunset" moves from its initial pastoral bliss to surprising ensemble funk.
