ALL RISE: A Joyful Elegy For Fats Waller

Jason Moran

Released: Sep 2014
Label: Blue Note (BLU)
If you haven't heard Fats' original performances of his classics -- like "Honeysuckle Rose," "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Lulu's Back in Town" -- you absolutely need to fix that. But once you have that iconic music in the memory bank, come back to pianist Moran's enjoyable contemporary updating of those and other tracks by the great Harlem stride pianist and singer. Along with Blue Note label head Don Was, Meshell Ndegeocello co-produces, which assures that Waller's R&B sensibility will be tended to with the right kind of funk. And she makes the vocal part of "This Joint Is Jumpin'," her own, too.
