Biography

Along with My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and Candlemass, Katatonia had a hand in the formation of what became known as doom metal. Where Candlemass flew high and My Dying Bride trudged through rivers of Sabbath's blood in the beginning, Katatonia have always represented the more gothic aspect, at times connecting the dots between The Cure and metal. They formed in Stockholm in 1991; their debut EP, Jhva Elohim Meth ... The Revival, came out in 1992, and their first full-length, Dance of December Souls, appeared in 1993. Between 1992 and 2009, the band released six more EPs and eight more albums, with the critically acclaimed Night Is the New Day hitting the shelves in July 2009. Over the years, the band's sound has veered closer and closer to the goth elements that have always informed its music, even incorporating understated industrial touches at times.
