Friends & Lovers (Edited)

Marsha Ambrosius

Released: Jul 2014

Ambrosius has too many good ideas. There's the straight-up bedroom music of the mattress-thumping "Night Time" and the self-explanatory "69." Then she covers Sade's "Love Is Stronger than Pride" and adds an ill-fitting loop from Jeru the Damaja's "Come Clean." "La La La La La" takes its chorus from Minnie Riperton's "Loving You." And "Cupid" inadvertently reveals how much her vocal intonations are influenced by Michael Jackson, for whom she wrote "Butterflies" over a decade ago. There are glimpses of beauty here, even if Friends and Lovers as a whole doesn't quite match her ambitions.
