As if to subvert their own legacy as fuzzy indie electronica darlings just about everything MGMT has released after their 2007 game-changing debut has been doggedly unpredictable and eccentric, and Little Dark Age -- which possesses all the bummer vibes of a breakup album -- carries on that cracked tradition. "She Works Out to Much" establishes the tone with its anti-social media cheekiness and new wave horns submerged in a warped cassette-like warble that would sound right at home on an early Ariel Pink record. This should come as no surprise considering Pink helped compose "When You Die," another new wave-style ditty packed with precisely the kind of anti-love venom Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook spit on Squeeze's early singles. Yet it's a venom that then boomerangs back on the duo when the Syd Barrett-kissed "When You're Small" wraps self-loathing in lush if weary psychedelia.
