The Man Upstairs

Robyn Hitchcock

Released: Aug 2014
Label: Yep Roc Records
In which the 61-year-old ex-Soft Boy and 72-year-old folk producer Joe Boyd set out (they say) to conjure a 1960s Judy Collins LP. Ten songs -- just like in the old vinyl days -- are split between covers (of varying familiarity) and new Hitchcock compositions. Remakes range from the Doors' 1967 "Crystal Ship" to 2012's power-poppish "Ferries" by Norway's I Was A King. Mellow cuts by the Psychedelic Furs and Roxy Music get tapped too, along with an even lower energy Grant-Lee Phillips mope. Among the originals, "Somebody to Break Your Heart" stands out for its shuffle and talk of skeletons.
