Fragrant World

Yeasayer

image
Released: Aug 2012
Label: Secretly Canadian
On their third album, Yeasayer stuff their global grab-bag of pop experiments into a laboratory of electronics. In a way, Fragrant World feels more insular in its digitized existence than past releases. Crunchy synths and assertive blips and bloops often eclipse vocalist Chris Keating's soothing yet restless register, which every now and then gasps out words of profundity: "Live in the moment, never count on longevity." There may be no hooks to grab onto here, but there's still an Eastern-inspired mysticism floating through it all, best captured on "Longevity," "Henrietta" and "Demon Road."
